Interstitial fibrosis is the final common pathway to all forms of endstage renal disease. Fibroblasts are the principal cell type responsible for this fibrotic process but little is known about their origin or how they are engaged during renal injury. Over the last few years we have developed some new probes to help us better identify the cell fate of renal cells. A seamless plasticity exists among cells shifting between epithelial and mesenchymal phenotypes during early development and again later, in adult tissues, following wound repair or organ remodeling in response to injury, and again when epithelial tumors metastasize.
