Current Issues in Peritoneal Dialysis

Many studies published in the last few years have shown that the survival of peritoneal dialysis (PD) is superior to that of haemodialysis (HD) patients, at least during the first 2 years of treatment. After that period a survival advantage develops in favor of HD. This has been attributed to low of residual renal function, the dialysis dose, and the development of alterations in the peritoneal membrane that may develop during long-term PD. These factors will be discussed in the subsequent sections.
